Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Her father, a carnival barker, passed away when she was a small child, forcing her mother to provide for the family by working as a waitress and cleaning woman. Ruth was raised in the poor tenement district of Boston, Massachusetts, where she was educated. She quit the institution she was in within two years of her education to pursue the profession of acting. The path she chose was filled with problems. After landing a gig as a model in New York as a model for a magazine that dealt with detectives, she was unable to find jobs in the stage. Her next job was as the "hat check" lady at a club until she decided to quit and moved back to Boston. It was the New England Repertory Company was the first job she had as a steady actor. The company paid her doing shifts during the day, in the ushering department. She graduated with a diploma in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
